Childcare around the world: What's it like for children, families, and providers in other countries?

June 26, 2025 01:00 PM America/New_York

There is work to do when it comes to improving access to high-quality childcare in America. If we don't take steps to fix it, families will continue to find care unaffordable and providers won't be able to keep their doors open. But how do we fix it?

What if we look at what's working (or not!) in other countries. After all—someone has to have figured it out, right?

Join our expert panelists, Anders Laustsen (CEO and co-founder at Famly) and Jackie Mader (Senior Early Education Reporter at the Hechinger Report), as they take us on a tour of early education in several countries and share insights from their firsthand experience.

From the publicly funded, play-based learning approach in Copenhagen to forest schools in Norway, we can all borrow elements that make sense for families, educators, and children. And after all that, we'll talk about the big question: Is there such a thing as the perfect model? What could the U.S. borrow—or build better?

The conversation will include:

  • How do other systems benefit children
  • How do other systems benefit childcare businesses
  • Are teachers in other countries' as underpaid and underappreciated?
  • How are other places funding early care and education?

Leave with ideas that anyone can implement, regardless of whether you oversee a program or state policy.

Anders Laustsen

Founder and CEO, Famly

Anders Laustsen is the CEO and co-founder of Famly, a platform built to make life easier for early childhood professionals and the families they serve.

Since launching Famly in 2013, Anders has been on a mission to give educators more time for what really matters — the children — by cutting down on paperwork, improving parent communication, and bringing smarter tools into the classroom. Under his leadership, Famly has grown into a leading software provider for early education centers across Europe and the U.S.

With a graduate degree from Copenhagen Business School, Anders began his career working for Maersk around the world, specifically in Denmark and India. But, he always had an interest in starting his own business.

When he's not at Famly, you can find him with his family - his wife and two daughters under the age of 6. He's enjoying living stateside, taking advantage of all that it has to offer - (American) football games, greasy fast food and visiting national parks.
